1). Why do you believe that the selfie has taken off as a worldwide phenomenon?
I think selfies are so popular for three reasons. 1. We have cameras with us at all times now. 2. The more we see them, the more we are alright with taking one ourselves rather than viewing them as narcissistic. 3. Feedback! Humans love talking about themselves and getting positive feedback about their looks.
2). Can a selfie be a work of art? Why or why not?
I think selfies themselves are not necessarily considered art but I think anything can be art if put into that context. For instance, my featured artist, on 9-7-14 used her selfies to create very meaningful art.
I love your view on why selfies have become so popular these days. All people want feedback about themselves and selfies are a way to gain confidence. I also liked your opinion on why selfies are not art. I too believe that if used with more meaning then yes maybe they can be used for art.
ReplyDeleteI also like your reasons why selfies have taken off! Even the people who don't like talking about themselves like to get feedback on their appearance and those who do like talking about them find selfies as an encouragement to talk about themselves even more.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it's the context of the picture as well. If the selfie was taken to be art then it is, if not then it's not.
ReplyDeleteYeah your first answer is close to mine. If you check out my blog i found this video of a psychologist that was studying the reactions of babies in neglect and basically it shows how we are programed to want attention and feel connection with others.
ReplyDeleteAgree a lot about this selfie phenomenon. We strive for attention and to be accepted by others and I think that is a big reason why the selfie became incredibly popular. As being art, it seems like it is slowly becoming an art form because of the way it expresses oneself in a photo. Though a lot of artists don't want to accept that reality.
ReplyDeleteFor your points 2 and 3, that is essentially the essence of society. i do also like ur idea that they can be used as art, but most popular selfies are just following the narcissistic tendencies.
